10 Current French Male Singers - French Iceberg (2023)

I decidedten current French singerswhich I think are perfect for learning French. The different criteria for these French artist-singers were the ease of understanding and the importance of their lyrics.

One more thing, they are almost all established French artists respfrench bandswith successful careers. I chose different styles of music, from french rock to french dub andFrench rap.

Let's start with this selection of French singers!

1-M

It seems obvious for this French male artist, M is his stage name. His real name is Mathieu Chedid and the M stands for his first name, Mathieu. He created a rock 'n' roll persona named M. You may not know, but his last name was the reason he chose a stage name. His father, Louis Chedid, is a famous French musician and Mathieu Chedid didn't just want to explain his success by being the son of a celebrity.

I went to his concert twice and was lucky enough to be the last time for a special concert that brought all his family members together in Lyon. Her father is a musician, but her sister Émilie and brother Joseph are also musicians.

I recommend you to visit one of his concerts, he is a real showman, he always goes to the mosh pit to play guitar, sing or both. He mainly sings about being positive in life, there are a lot of good vibes in his lyrics and shows.

2 – Manu Chao

Spanish speakers may be really surprised, but Manu Chao, with his birth name José Manuel Tomás Arturo Chao, is a French citizen who was born in Paris in 1961 to Spanish parents. He had his first success in 1987 with his band Mano Negra. He then decided to take an eight-year hiatus and wrote the excellent album Clandestino (1998). His songs are in Spanish, French, English or a mix of all three.

Again, he's great at live shows, he puts a lot of energy into it, I love it. They can stay longer if the audience asks for more songs. He stayed at least two more hours when I went to his concert!

His lyrics deal with inequalities in the world, corruption and love. I recommend listening to the 2007 album "Radiolina".

3 – Bent Inc.

This is a French dub music band originating from my hometown of Saint-Étienne. These French singers are probably the most famous dub band in France. Dub Inc was formed in 1998 and some of its members come from different backgrounds and sing about politics, French society and racism.

Like the previous two, they are fantastic for live concerts. They mostly sing in French and sometimes in Arabic or English. His big hit is the French song "Rude Boy" (created before Rihanna's 😉), but I prefer the next one.

4 – Oxmo Puccino

He was born in Mali in 1974 and came to Paris at the age of five. He has French nationality. From this list, it is probably one of the best for copywriting. I'm a big fan of his songs, he has such a charismatic voice. By the way, he collaborated with M on the song "Bal de Bakamako". Oxmo Puccino is one of my favorite French singers on this list!

5 – Odezenne

This French band from Bordeaux writes melancholy and beautiful French songs about life. Honestly, you shouldn't listen to them when you're feeling down, it wouldn't help 🙂 Their songs are like poems with electronic sounds.

6 - Big Flo and Oil

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of this French rap duo, a group of two brothers from Toulouse. I have to admit that their lyrics are good, I like the fact that they sing about life issues. These French singers got famous in France by posting some videos on YouTube. It's funny, you look so young in the next video. I rememberThis freestyle was all over Facebook in 2011.

Since 2011 they are two big stars in France and give their concerts in stadiums. For the story, the father is Argentine and the mother is of Algerian origin.His songs in French are perfect to be taught in a French class.

7 - I AM

BeOld school French rap groupIt comes from the city of Marseille. It consists of the two main singers Echnaton and Shurik'n. These French musicians belong to the old school of French rap. Compared to most French rappers, IAM sings about French life and the French ghetto with beautiful, well-written lyrics.

The tricky part in terms of understanding is the Marseille accent, which you can easily hear. Here are my two favorite songs: (I could add "Petit frère" or "Je danse le Mia"). I like French music videos"the end of his world', which was a concert in Egypt in front of the Pyramids of Giza to celebrate the group's 20th anniversary.

8 - whorls in black

This talented French artist rose to fame with the French song "La fête de trop". I recommend listening to his album "Culte" released in 2018. A great French artist to learn French, he sings clearly with no accent.

9 - Stromas

I had to choose the Belgian artist for this list. Stromae was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1985. His real name is Paul Van Haver and he is a singer-songwriter of Rwandan origin. He produces and writes his own songs, which showcase all of his tremendous talent.

He even created his own clothing line called "Mosaert". For those who don't speak French, his stage name Stromae is Verlan for Maestro.The song "Alors on danse" will be the song that will change your entire musical career in 2009. The song quickly topped the charts in Belgium, France and Germany.

In 2010 he released the album "Cheese", which will have the same success with the general public as the first hit "Alors on danse". In 2013 he released the album "Racine Carré", on which he commemorates his missing father with the beautiful song "Papaoutai". This album is a masterpiece and every song is fantastic. If I had to choose one, it would be “ave cesária” (a tribute to the singer Cesária Évora).

Thanks to this album he won the French prize for the best album of the year at the Victoires de la Musique. Then he went on a world tour from 2013 to 2015, which exhausted him physically and mentally. He opted for a long break before returning in 2021a single "health"mian album "crowd"in 2022.

10 – Julien Doré

Popular French artist from the south of France, born in the beautiful town of Alès. He is now famous among the general French public. The road to success came with a happy situation (even more so than any other French male artist on this list).

It all started for him in 2007 in a French TV show "La Nouvelle Star" on the French channel M6. The show introduces potential performers across France to discover the next big French star. When it was her turn to sing for the jury, she was denied the performance because she wanted to sing on her ukulele. The organizers convinced him to come back and sing without the instrument. He eventually managed to qualify for the next stage before winning that edition and becoming the new star.

He has had a prolific career to date with the release of five albums Replacement in 2008, Bichon in 2011, Love in 2013 & in 2016 and Aimé in 2020. Besides singing, he has also played for some productions! he is a good one toofrench actor. Lately,He starred in the famous French series "Call my agent”in the second season.

Vocally, she stands out with her gentle half-timbered voice and poetic lyrics. Many of his songs are about love (super cliché for a French artist). I like the songs "Paris-Seychelles" or "Chou Wasabi" (featuring Micky Green) from the "Love" album. But his most emblematic song (for me) is "leslimits" from the album "Ersatz".
